World Spin in Public Day Celebration

A Brief Spin Through History

Worldwide Spin in Public Day began over 15 years ago, sparked by a passionate group of spinners in Tulsa, Oklahoma (the Get Stitchin’ crew). Their goal? To celebrate the ancient, meditative art of handspinning – twisting fibers from wool, alpaca, cotton, silk, or even exotic blends into beautiful, functional yarn. What started as a local idea quickly spun worldwide, with events now popping up in parks, museums, city squares, and cafes across continents.

It’s more than just spinning; it’s about preserving a timeless skill, connecting with community, and demystifying where our yarn truly comes from in an age of fast fashion.

Why Spin in Public?

  • Share the Joy: Watch passersby light up with curiosity as your wheel hums or your drop spindle dances. It’s the perfect icebreaker!
  • Educate and Inspire: Demonstrate how fiber becomes yarn – from fluffy roving to plied perfection. Kids (and adults!) love trying it for the first time.
  • Build Community: Connect with fellow spinners, swap tips on drafting techniques, admire each other’s handdyed braids, and maybe even organize a group ply-along.
  • Embrace the Unexpected: Spin at a coffee shop, beach, farmers’ market, or historic site. The more public, the better!

No experience required – beginners are welcome to observe, ask questions, or give it a whirl (pun intended).

Our city hosted its first Renaissance Fair this past long weekend and our guild was invited to demonstrate weaving and spinning, so of course I had to bring the great wheel! I only use it maybe once a …

How to Participate in 2026

  1. Grab Your Tools: Dust off your spinning wheel, e-spinner, or favorite drop spindle. Pack some gorgeous fiber – think vibrant handdyed merino, luxurious silk, or sustainable plant fibers.
  2. Find or Host an Event: Check local fiber guilds, yarn shops, or the official WWSIP Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/wwsipday) for meetups near you. Can’t find one? Start your own – a park bench counts!
  3. Spread the Word: Share your spins on social media with #WWSIP2026 or #SpinInPublic. Tag us for a feature!
  4. Safety First: Choose a visible, welcoming spot and be ready to chat (or politely redirect the “Is that for making clothes?” questions).

Whether you’re a seasoned spinner plying art yarns or a newbie mastering your first singles, this day is for you. Let’s twist together and keep the ancient craft of handspinning alive and thriving!
