James Monroe Birthplace (Colonial Beach)

Date: Saturday, June 13 (or Sunday, June 14)

Event: James Monroe Birthplace (Colonial Beach)

Join us at the James Monroe Birthplace near Colonial Beach on Saturday, June 13 (or Sunday, June 14). Visit the Fredericksburg Spinners and Weavers Guild booth for friendly, hands-on fiber arts demonstrations that show how fleece and plant fibers become yarn, cloth, and finished pieces.

What you will see at our booth

  • Spinning: How fiber is drafted and twisted into yarn using a drop spindle and spinning wheel.
  • Weaving: How warp and weft work together on a loom to create cloth.
  • Knitting and crochet: How yarn becomes hats, scarves, and more.
  • Felting: How wool fibers lock together to make a dense fabric, plus small project examples.
  • Natural fibers and tools: A quick look at wool, alpaca, cotton, and flax, plus carders, bobbins, and other essential tools.

Try-it activities (as time allows)

  • Touch and compare different fibers.
  • Try drafting fiber and adding twist with a simple spindle.
  • Learn a few weaving words and see a small loom in action.
