Event: International Family Day at the James Monroe Museum ( https://fxbg.com/calendar-item/family-fair/)

Join us for International Family Day at the James Monroe Museum on Saturday, May 30. Stop by the Fredericksburg Spinners and Weavers Guild booth for hands-on fiber arts demonstrations and family-friendly activities that show how fleece and plant fibers become colorful yarn, fabric, and finished pieces.

What you will see at our booth

  • Spinning: See how fiber is drafted and twisted into yarn using a drop spindle and spinning wheel.
  • Weaving: Learn how warp and weft work together on a loom to create cloth.
  • Knitting and crochet: Watch how yarn becomes hats, scarves, and more.
  • Felting: See how wool fibers lock together, plus small project examples.
  • Natural fibers and tools: Explore wool, alpaca, cotton, and flax, plus carders, bobbins, and other essential tools.

Possible bonus demo: natural dyeing (details coming)

This year we may include a dyeing demonstration. If we do, you can see how yarn and fiber can be transformed with color using dye techniques and safe handling practices.

Try-it activities (as time allows)

  • Touch and compare different fibers.
  • Try drafting fiber and adding twist with a simple spindle.
  • Learn a few weaving words and see a small loom in action.
